Responsible Gambling
Start from what the activity is
Gambling is paid entertainment whose long-run price is a loss. That is not an opinion but a property built into the mathematics: a house edge exists in every game, and return to player describes a long run rather than an evening. The only useful question before playing is therefore how much money and how much time you are willing to spend, not how much you might win.
In practice this reduces to one rule: the limit goes in before the first stake. A decision made mid-session is always worse than one made before it, and every tool below is built on that observation.
Why a reader in Finland should read this carefully
Finland's position produces the most common misconception in this whole area. Gambling in mainland Finland is a state monopoly run by Veikkaus, and a Veikkaus account can carry a self-imposed block. Many people assume that block covers all gambling — it covers Veikkaus products only. On an international platform it does nothing at all.
Under the current plan a licensing system for online casinos is due to open in 2027, with supervision moving from the National Police Board to a new licensing and supervision agency. Until that happens, the protections on an international platform belong to the operator and have to be switched on by the player.
Three layers of protection
- Account-level limits. Deposit, loss and stake limits are set in the player account. They attach to the account rather than to one card or wallet, so changing payment method does not route around them.
- Time controls. A session reminder reports elapsed time at chosen intervals; a time-out locks the account for a set period. A time-out cannot be cancelled mid-period, which is the entire point of it.
- Device-level blocking. Software such as Gamban or Betblocker works at the browser and device level and covers every gambling site simultaneously. This is the only layer that does not depend on a single operator.
Setting a limit in practice
Limits sit in the account settings, usually under a responsible gambling or account menu. The direction decides how fast the change takes effect: lowering a limit, or setting one for the first time, applies immediately, because nobody should have to wait in order to spend less. Raising one goes through a cooling-off period and then needs a separate confirmation. Do nothing and the old limit simply stays.
A deposit limit is the most useful first tool, because it governs money going in rather than the outcome. A loss limit is more precise but reacts more slowly. For either, pick a figure you could lose without it touching the rest of the month.
Signs worth acting on
The useful signals are ordinary rather than dramatic: chasing losses with bigger stakes, playing with borrowed money, hiding play from people close to you, sessions that run past the time you meant to stop, and the point at which a win stops feeling like anything while a loss still feels like a lot. If even one of those is recognisable, a time-out is the right tool today rather than next month.
In Finland, Peluuri provides free and confidential support to players and to family members, including the Peli poikki programme and Tukinet. Contacting them does not require a situation to have become a crisis first.
For family and friends
Nobody has to prove anything before asking for advice. Peluuri's services cover family members too, and contact can be anonymous. Two practical things help more than argument: talking about money in concrete terms rather than accusations, and supporting the installation of device-level blocking, because that layer does not depend on a single account being closed.
Age and account misuse
An account is personal and for adults only. Keeping a minor away from it is mostly a device question: a separate user profile, a password stored in a password manager rather than in the browser, and blocking software. Handing an account to another person is prohibited in the operator's terms and in practice ends with a payout refused at verification. The verification sequence is described on the registration page.
Checklist
- Set a deposit limit before the first stake, not during a session.
- Remember that a Veikkaus block does not reach an international platform.
- Take a time-out immediately if losses are being chased with larger stakes.
- Device-level blocking is the only layer independent of any one operator.
- Peluuri's help is free and confidential — for family members as well.
Permanent closure and the grades of self-exclusion are covered on the self-exclusion page. For questions about money rather than control, see payments or support.
